In the years following Ignatius’ death in 1556, Jesuit spirituality both consolidated and changed. The spiritual freedom and creativity promoted by the Spiritual Exercises ran up against the need to maintain institutional order in an organisation that was expanding too rapidly. The tension here has its parallels in the contemporary Church. This atelier, centred on lectures given in English (slow, and foreigner-friendly), will look at how the problem played itself out in key writings from the second Jesuit generation.
